We watched a series of documentaries called Games Britannia which consists of three episodes, the first one which I will be talking about now is Dicing with Destiny.
This is a documentary about how ancient and medieval games were played and what the purpose of playing them was. For example the children’s game of snakes and ladders came from a Hindu game which was used to show the journey to enlightenment where as the medieval game of hnefetafl was used to simulate the outcomes of battles.
During the documentary you also learn about how games were used for gambling, one game which was mentioned was Hazard, it was a game based around dice rolls so that the outcomes were completely random. This game quickly became condemned by the church because it wasn't a game that was played for fun, only money, this is because the players had to pay more and more each round in order to stay in and play the next round.
